What Is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

This is a very common, chronic intense pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve in the face.

What are the symptoms ?

It generally gives a sharp excruciating pain sensation, when you accidentally stimulate your trigeminal nerve at neck or face.

Specific symptoms can vary from patient to patient, like :

  • Electric shock like shooting or jabbing pain, sudden or episodic.

  • Pain shoots up spontaneously and immediately, on triggering the nerve

  • Episodes of severe attack, lasting for weeks or months, followed by a long period of no pain

  • Constant aches, burning sensation and spasms

  • Pain usually affects one side of the face at a time.

  • Pain either focused on a paint, or spreads in a wide area

  • Pain attacks become more frequent and intense over time.

So, when to visit a doctor?

Do you often experience facial pain? Is it recurrent and intense? And doesn't heal by regular pain killers or gels? We think you should visit your doctor today. Early diagnosis makes the pain management easier.

What are the main causes ?

Trigeminal Neuralgia (also, tic douloureux) happens when the trigeminal nerve comes in close proximity to a blood vessel ( artery or vein) at the base of your skull.

It may occur with :

  • ageing

  • multiple sclerosis

  • diseases that damages the myelin sheath (cover of any nerve).

People with :

  •  brain lesion

  • surgical injury

  • Facial trauma

  • Migraine and other neurologic disorders are more likely to develop trigeminal neuralgia.

What can trigger this?

Pain can be induced by several triggers, such as :

  1. Chewing, biting, even speaking and smiling

  2. Shaving

  3. Touching jawline, side of the face and neck at the base of skull.

  4. Putting a makeup

  5. Brushing and washing

  6. Drinking
